Organic Farming Can Damage the Climate


In the past few years, the demand for organic products has increased significantly. It is the general notion that organic products are far much better for health than conventional products. But, according to new research, organic farming may have a larger impact on climate. As organic farming require a larger area for farming that reduces the area for forests because of deforestation. This international study involved the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and published in the Nature journal. The study also showed that even organic meat and dairy products are worsening than their conventionally produced equivalents.

Use of New Metric Shows Negative Impact of Organic Farming

The researchers have used a new metrics called carbon opportunity cost. This metrics helps in evaluating the effect greater land-use for organic farming leading to high carbon dioxide emissions due to deforestation.  This metric is based on the amount of carbon that is stored in forests, which is released as carbon dioxide due to deforestation. It is one of the first studies in the world to use this metric.

Difficulty in Meeting Multiple Environmental Goals

Fertilizer is a complete no-no in organic farming, but this result in creating a larger damage to the environment. The objective of organic farming is to deliberately use resources such as water and energy over a long period. During this process, only naturally derived pesticides are used. On the other hand, there is no such evidence to show that organic food is healthier and environmentally friendly than conventional food. This is as per the National Food Administration of Sweden. Therefore, meeting environmental goals is highly dependent on one’s priorities. Moreover, this study shows organically farmed food is worse for the climate.
